Our tubal reversal patients are always ecstatic when they conceive, and want to do everything they can to ensure their baby’s health while in the womb, as a child, and as an adult.
Dr. Morice has long touted the benefits of both a healthy birth weight and breastfeeding for our tubal ligation reversal patients. A new study confirms that children reap the benefits from these factors well into adulthood.
Northwestern University researchers examined levels of a C-Reactive Protein (CRP) in more than 7,000 adults aged 24-32 years. Levels of CRP indicate levels of chronic inflammation, an indicator of disease risk. They compared CRP levels to the subjects’ birth weight and length of breastfeeding.
Subjects who were breastfed for 3-12 months after birth had 20-30% less CRP in their blood compared to those who were never breastfed or were breastfed for less than 3 months. Breastfeeding has previously been found to affect metabolic activity in infants and reduce the risk of childhood obesity. Obesity contributes to higher levels of CRP, so there may be a relationship between the two.
Researchers also found that every pound of birth weight was associated with a 5% decrease in CRP levels. These lower levels of CRP indicate lower levels of chronic inflammation and a decreased risk of heart disease.
In light of this, we continue to encourage our tubal ligation reversal patients to do everything they can during pregnancy to ensure a full term birth, and to engage in breastfeeding with their baby after delivery.
While there are unavoidable causes of low birth weight, there are many causes that tubal ligation reversal patients can avoid. Smoking, alcohol, and drug use can contribute to low birth weight. While pregnant or trying to conceive, quit cigarettes, avoid illicit drugs, and avoid alcohol altogether. Poor nutrition during pregnancy can also cause low birth weight. Make sure you are eating enough calories and getting all the vitamins and minerals you need, especially folic acid, from a varied diet. Stress can also lead to a low birth weight. If you are working while pregnant, take time to destress through meditation or yoga and reach out for support from your family and friends during this time. you may use an advance pregnancy calculator to estimate the expected date of your baby.
The benefits of breastfeeding for tubal reversal patients are clear. Breastfeeding passes the mother’s immunity to the baby, leads to decreased levels of CPD, and is linked to decreased health problems in breastfeeding mothers. You can get these effects by breastfeeding for at least 3 months. Luckily, whether or not to breastfeed is typically in the mother’s control.
