It’s important to know that whether or not you’ve had a tubal reversal, you are still at risk of blood clots after delivery. It was previously believed that women were at a higher risk for blood clots for up to 6 weeks after delivery.

A new study, however, reports that women are at higher risk of blood clots twice as long after childbirth as previously believed. The new research suggests that women are at increased risk for blood clots up to 12 weeks after delivery.

The study was published in the New England Journal of Medicine. The researchers looked at post-pregnancy data from 2005 to 2010 and tracked how many women had blood clots in the 16 months following delivery. More than 1,000 women had blood clot events within this time period. They found that within 6 weeks after delivery, risk of blood clots was more than 10 times the normal rate. Within weeks 6-12 after delivery, the risk dropped substantially, but was still twice the normal rate.

It is not clear why women are more prone to forming blood clots after delivery, though it is thought to be tied to elevated levels of estrogen. Many doctors believe it is the bodys’ natural way of preventing hemorrhaging during childbirth.

Regardless of the cause, it’s important to be aware of the heightened risk and watch for symptoms. Symptoms of blood clots include pain in the leg or chest, swelling of the leg, a sharp, sudden headache, or a loss of balance or sensation on one side of the body. If you experience any of these, call Dr. Morice at (985) 702-BABY immediately.

Women who are obese and/or smoke cigarettes and have high blood pressure are at an even higher risk of developing blood clots.
